The Cafe, Emlenton

Rateing: 11.00 out of a possible 17.5

We enjoyed our breakfast. My pancakes were wonderful, flavorful and made with real buttermilk. Mike "Mess" as it's called was good. The sausage was standard fare and the homefries were deep fried with no onions or peppers. I really like pan or gridle fried home fries. If they had those & homemade sausage this would have been the new number 1.
ps. The coffe had flavor.

The owner/chef came out to ask how the breakfast was and talked to us for a few minutes. Mike spilled he guts about what we do & then I told hime I'm in the food business. Shame on us! We are getting business cards made up!

Holiday Inn Express, Grove City

Last week we experienced a restaurant that was so bad Mike had to go on vacation. As he cruises the oceans on a big fancy cruise ship, eating himself silly I was stuck at home to venture out.

Being it was Mike's turn to buy, I went for the free breakfast at the Holidy Inn Express, they don't ask for a room key or anything Just walk in and eat. I had Highly processed eggs, standard sausage, cinnamon rolls, orange juice & good coffee.

They receive no rating because I ate for free & they are a chain. It was clean....and again FREE!

BJ's Restaurant (Knox, PA)

Rating: .445 out of a possible 17.5

First impressions rang true at BJ’s. The outside was tattered and the 1960's paint job was peeling, but through that door we expected a breakfast experience like no other on this earth. With the optimism of a first grader we burst through that tattered door to find an "experience like no other on earth." The inside was like The Black Hole of Filth , all the filth from miles away was gathered in one room at least that is our hope (You couldn't see the kitchen) because we stayed to eat. The food was OK after your senses got past the smell, dried carpet dirt, discarded tooth picks on the floor, some strange food crumbs under the table and bathroom smells (located in the dining room), all the finest experiences of eating at your local dump, grease soaked walls, carpet, ceilings, smoke oders, and of course the filth, Who could ask for anything more?

If you got bored or wanted to spend more time abrorbing the flavor of this establishment, you could get a history lesson by reading the month old newpapers laying around.

The highlight of this eatery (DUMP) was leaving!

Mamma Jeans (Barkeyville, PA)

Rating: 8.75 out of a possible 17.5

S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedure) Maybe it doesn't apply to food, but I think so. Standard eggs, sausage, toast, homefries, jelly(Country folks still say Jelly). The food was good but don't you want something special. Bigger Eggs, Special Homefries, nice jams, Fresh Sausage. So S.O.P. applies.

Did you know the locals sometimes call it Barkleyville...Kings Restaurants refer to the area as Harrisville because they aren't from Barkeyville.

Also we don't rate chain restaurants such as Kings because they are S.O.P. OVER & OVER.

Grantham's Landing (Cochranton, PA)

Rating: 12.5 out of a possible 17.5

Our original plan was to eat Corn Meal Mush. Everybody told us, they had great mush...Well we travelled 45 minutes and they didn't have the much touted mush. So this place had some hurdles to climb to make the grade.

The restaurant was crowded, with a good amout of 4wd trucks outside.(A Good Sign)

The eggs, toast, coffee and FRESH Sausage Patties were great.

My only question, What happened to the Mush.

Also a good thing, after eating here you may need to visit: http://www.coolspringsfitness.com/

French Creek (Franklin, PA)

Rating: 11.5 out of a possible 17.5

You order at the counter, get your first cup of coffee and find a table. We looked out to the street. Small cafe atmosphere. Watress delivered the meal & more coffee.

All Good, Clean, Good Character

Raindow Valley (Hadley, PA)

Coach Diner (Fredonia, PA)

Rating: 8.5 of a possible 17.5

Don't take the wife to this place, she'll stay in the car. It's not for weak people. It's the kind of place you have to go see. They should sell tee shirts that say "I ate at the Coach Diner & Survived". The customers are really nice and they add to the character.

This is an actual rail coach!

Dirty But had a lot of Character "I might Kill You" apron worn by watress, and she just might!

The New Fifties Diner (New Castle, PA)

Luigi's (Slippery Rock, PA)

Rating: 12 out of a possible 17.5

Clean, Lots of Coffee, Homefries are Deep Fried, Sausage best non fresh patties yet, eggs cooked perfect & good toast. Best Value at 2.29

Cookery (Hermitage, PA)

Rating: 7.5 out of a possible 17.5

What is that smell, dirt? The eggs were good, sausage SOP, Bacon thin, 1/2 a frittata would be enough, not bad-just to much flavor, The carpet needs cleaned and where have all the people gone? Very Slow We must not be alone in this rating.

Centurian (Petrolia PA)

Total Rating: 11.75 of Possible 17.5

The sausage was fresh large patties(2), the eggs a little small, home fries were plentiful(Sliced not cubed), toast was good as was the coffee. The price was reasonable. There were characters there but the placed lacked character.

Oskies (Franklin PA)

The total Rating for this restaurant was: 6.25 out of 17.5

SUCKED, Eggs tasted like Fish, Homefries Blah, Toast Thick but Under Toasted, Coffee Very Weak, Mike's French Toast OK, Syrup was like dirty water, Sausage disgusting, Some lady (customer) was hacking up a fur ball during breakfast(entertaining but nasty) I wouldn't let my dead aunt eat here!

The Rating System

Ken & Mike rate the restaurants they visit based upon numerous variables. They include but are not limited to:
Overall Breakfast Rating 1-5
Sausage Factor 1-2.5
Bacon Factor 1-2.5
Ham Factor 1-2.5
Egg Factor 1-2.5
Home Fry Factor 1-2.5
Pancake Factor 1-2.5
Cleanliness 1-2.5
Smoke Factor -1
Character 1-2.5

The maximum rating is 17.5 because we rate either Bacon, Sausage or Ham, not all three. We also rate either Pancakes or Eggs, not both.

Home Fries

Home Fries
Who Invented Home Fries?

Country Ham

Note: This week I learned the proper way to cook Country Ham. Simmer the sliced ham in coffee, not to long though because it will become tough. Then Presto! You also have Red Eye Gravy. The Southerner I know says his grits are great with his red eye gravy...Thats why they lost the "War of Nothern Agression" (They are still fighting the Civil War) Who in their right mind would eat salty ham and then make a salty gravy to place over equally bad grits!

Country hams are salt- and nitrate-cured for about a month and may be hardwood (usually hickory and red oak) smoked, then aged for several months to a year. Smoking is not legally mandated for making country ham. Some types of country ham (such as the "salt-and-pepper ham" of North Carolina) are not smoked. The smoking process turns the meat a much redder color than other hams. They are usually sold in stores unrefrigerated as whole bone-in hams packaged in rough cotton bags, with identifying markings printed on the bags.

Sausage

Sausage is a logical outcome of efficient butchery. Sausage-makers put to use meat and animal parts that are edible and nutritious, but not particularly appealing, such as scraps, organ meats, blood, and fat, and that allow the preservation of meat that can not be consumed immediately. These were typically salted and stuffed into a tubular casing made from the cleaned intestine of the animal producing the characteristic cylindrical shape. Hence, sausages, puddings and salami are amongst the oldest of prepared foods, whether cooked and eaten immediately or dried to varying degrees.

Hash Browns

Who really eats this stuff?
Hash browns or hashed browns are a simple
potato preparation in which potato pieces are pan-fried after being shredded, julienned, diced, or riced. In some cultures, hash browns or hashed browns can refer to any of these preparations, while in others it may refer to one specific preparation. In parts of the UK, hash browns can mean fried left over mashed potato. Hash browns are a staple breakfast food at diners in North America, where they are often fried on a large common cooktop or grill.

Toast

Toast is sliced bread which has been browned by exposure to dry heat ("toasted"). This browning reaction is a form of Maillard reaction. Toasting warms the bread, making it more pleasant to eat for some, and makes it crisp such that it holds toppings more securely. Toasting is also a common method of making stale bread palatable. Toast is often served with butter, cheese, marmalade, or any number of other toppings. Toast is a typical breakfast food.

Toast

Toast
We Like Rye Toast. Our toast should be dense & rounded in shape. Crispy but not dry!
